Trauma

Trauma is physical, emotional, social, and psychological experiences in response to a high level of distress. What could cause trauma?

  • Physical, sexual, verbal, or emotional abuse

  • Natural disasters

  • Hospitalization/medical challenges

  • Sudden death/loss

  • Witnessing violence

  • Neglect

  • An accident

  • High chronic stress

  • Childbirth

  • Vicarious Trauma (witnessing or hearing about from someone else)

What are some of the things that I might feel when experiencing the effects of trauma?

  • Shock

  • Numbness

  • Flashbacks

  • Intense emotions

  • Avoidance

  • Irritability/anger

  • Intrusive thoughts and memories

  • Anxiety

  • On alert

  • Physical symptoms (sleep disturbance, chronic health conditions, respiratory problems, stomach issues, muscle tightness, etc)

    What will we do in therapy to help address trauma symptoms?

  • Re-establish a sense of safety and trust

  • Strengthen and develop coping mechanisms

  • Reduce triggers

  • Address where trauma is stored in the body and how it impacts you

  • Process emotions and feelings connected to the trauma

  • Can utilize EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Sandtray Therapy, Somatic Therapy, Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques, Self-Compassion Therapy

Grief

Grief is deep sorrow and anguish that comes from a loss. What could cause grief?

  • Loss of a loved one

  • Loss of a pet

  • Loss of relationship

  • Career loss

  • Loss of health

  • Anticipatory grief due to an impending loss

  • Moving/leaving

  • Other

    What are some of the things I might feel when grieving?

  • Sadness and intense emotions

  • Shock

  • Anger

  • Guilt

  • Numbness

  • Physical symptoms (muscle tightness, headaches, stomach issues, weight loss/gain, fatigue, shortness of breath, etc.)

    What will we do in therapy to reduce grief symptoms?

  • Process the emotions and feelings attached to the grief

  • Understand the dual process of grieving and restoration

  • Strengthen and develop coping skills

  • Address where grief is stored in your body and how it is impacting you physically

  • Understand grief, how it progresses, and how to process it as it progresses

  • Can utilize EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Sandtray Therapy, Somatic Therapy, Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques, Self-Compassion Therapy
